In Praise of Ignorance
In the 80s a University of Arizona surgery professor proposed teaching a class on medical ignorance, emphasizing the unknown in medicine. Students remember it fondly as "Ignorance 101". According to legend, Socrates wandered the streets of Athens trying to find someone who could say, "I do not know". As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of ignorance and uncertainty. We think of not knowing as something that can be overcome, but every answer is accompanied by a further question. There is a terrible cost to living perpetually in a rational state. It's so important to be irrational, spontaneous, to be in a state of not knowing. What do you know for certain about your religious beliefs?
